Agnès Buzyn, the Minister of Solidarity and Health launched on September 20, 2019, the 4th National Health Nutrition Program (PNNS). Objective: to allow the French to stay in good health throughout their lives thanks to good reflexes to eat better and move better.
Initiated in 2001, the National Food and Nutrition Program (PNAN) is a public health plan. Several objectives initially set have been partially or totally achieved, such as the reduction in the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children, the increase in fruit consumption in adults, etc. However, these improvements have not homogeneously concerned the population and social inequalities in health have widened in the field of nutrition.
This new national program launched on September 20, 2019 by the Minister of Health sets the course for food and nutrition policy for the next five years: 2019-2023, bringing together for the first time the actions of the National Program for food (PNA3) and the National Health Nutrition Program (PNNS4).
Priority axes
– Improving the food and physical environment for all to make it more favorable to health and to reduce social inequalities in health.
– Encourage health-promoting behaviors. Food education should be extended from kindergarten to high school. The website eat-move.frwill be updated with the new nutritional recommendations.
– Better care for people who are overweight, undernourished or suffering from chronic illnesses. And this by reinforcing the prescription of adapted physical activity or by establishing a “national week of undernutrition” which will aim, each year, to raise awareness among the general public and health professionals.
– Boosting a territorial dynamic: by 2023, in each department, innovative local initiatives will be promoted and an annual conference will be organized to share good ideas.
– Develop research, expertise and monitoring in support of nutritional policy.
Set goals to reduce overweight
The Ministry of Solidarity and Health recalls that “nearly half of adults are overweight, including 17% obese, and social and territorial inequalities remain very marked: 4 times more children of workers than children of executives are obese. Thus, to meet this challenge, the 55 actions of the PNNS aim to achieve, in 5 years, the health objectives defined by the High Council for Public Health (HCSP) relating, in particular, to the nutritional status of children and adults. and dietary and physical activity recommendations. Specifically :
– Reduce obesity by 15% and stabilize overweight among adults;
– Reduce overweight and obesity among children and adolescents by 20%;
– Reduce the percentage of undernourished elderly people living at home or in institutions by at least 30% for those over 80 years old.
Nutri-Score, the French are favorable
Two years after its debut, it is also an opportunity to take stock of the Nutri-Score, which uses a letter and a color to inform consumers about the nutritional quality of a product. Emblematic of the PNNS, it should be further developed, including in collective catering in order to enable everyone to make an informed choice.
