Is the electronic cigarette losing ground in France? In October 2019, the market leaders looked gray: in the space of just a few months, sales of e-cigarettes fell by 15% to 20% in tobacconists, and by 10% to 40 % in specialized shops. And some see it as a reaction to the “mysterious epidemic” which has already killed 26 vapers in the United States and caused lung problems in 1,300 individuals…
In a report published this Monday, January 20, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) believes that electronic cigarettes are “harmful to health, no doubt“. It is however “too early to estimate the long-term impact of these devices, both on the health of vapers and on the health of the people around them“.
Electronic cigarette: proven risks for the heart and lungs
In detail, health authorities explain that electronic cigarettes “increase the risk of developing heart and lung diseases“. In pregnant women, the use of electronic cigarettes “can interfere with the proper development of the fetus“.
Finally, among adolescents (half of high school students tested vaping in 2018, according to the OFDT), the WHO specifies that “exposure to nicotine, even through an e-cigarette, impairs proper brain development with long-term harmful effects“. According to the WHO, young people who vape would also be more likely to smoke (later) classic cigarettes, cigars or shisha.
