Health authorities are relaunching a vaccination campaign to try to contain the recent resurgence of Covid-19 cases.
- All epidemiological indicators, increasing in town and in hospitals, reveal “an intensification of the circulation” of Covid-19, particularly among those aged 65 and over, according to Public Health France.
- Faced with this situation, health authorities are calling for increased vigilance, in particular through “the systematic adoption of barrier gestures”.
- To try to contain this increase, a new vaccination campaign against Covid-19, coupled with that against the flu, will be carried out from October 15, 2024 to the beginning of 2025. It will mainly target people aged 65 and over, as well as people at risk of serious illness.
Since mid-September, the country has been facing a notable increase in the circulation of Covid-19, warning Public health France in its weekly bulletin published on September 25. All the epidemiological indicators, increasing in town and in hospitals, reveal “intensification of traffic” of the virus, particularly among those aged 65 and over. An age group whose number of hospitalizations after a visit to the emergency room for Covid or suspected Covid has almost doubled in one week, going from 1.7% to 2.9% between September 9 and 22. Same observation for medical consultations and positive test results, which are increasing worryingly.
The increase in the Covid-19 positivity rate
Wastewater analysis, a complementary method of monitoring the virus, confirms this trend, with an increase in the detection of SARS-CoV-2 “for the fourth consecutive week”according to the health agency. The increase in the positivity rate of samples taken in the city, which reaches 29%, and that of visits to the emergency room for suspected Covid, which now represents 0.9% of admissions, also signals this resurgence.
Faced with this situation, health authorities are calling for increased vigilance, particularly through “the systematic adoption of barrier gestures”. Wearing a mask in busy places, regular hand washing, physical distancing and isolation in the event of symptoms are once again recommended. The objective is to limit the transmission of the virus, especially among the most vulnerable people.
A new vaccination campaign against the virus
To try to contain this increase, a new vaccination campaign against Covid-19, coupled with that against the flu, will be carried out from October 15, 2024 to the beginning of 2025. It will mainly target people aged 65 and over, as well as people at risk of serious illness. Public Health France reminds that certain adults (immunocompromised people, patients aged 65 and over with risk factors) can also benefit from specific antiviral treatment for Covid-19. As fall sets in, this initiative aims to prevent an overload of hospital services and protect populations most exposed to complications linked to respiratory infections.
As a reminder, today, it is possible to get vaccinated at your doctor, with a nurse, but also in a pharmacy. Just like getting vaccinated for Covid and the flu at the same time.
