Addicted to sodas, juices, lemonades and other iced teas? Warning: according to a new study carried out by the Boston University School of Medicine (in the United States) and published in the scientific journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia, sugary drinks are dangerous for the brain: they disrupt in particular the ability to memorize and ‘learning.
The study was carried out on 4,000 American volunteers. For several weeks, they underwent cognitive tests as well as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations.
“Light” sugary drinks are also dangerous
Results ? Researchers found that participants who drank at least 2 glasses of a sugary drink (fruit juice, lemonade, soda) per day or 3 glasses of soda per week had lower than average brain volume, less effective short-term memory. as well as a smaller hippocampus – this part of the brain is particularly linked to learning. In the volunteers who consumed only one drink per day, the brain size was also smaller than average. Warning signs that of course evoke Alzheimer’s disease …
What about low-fat sugary drinks? According to the authors of the study (who carried out a second observation 2888 people over the age of 45 for 10 years), drinks stamped “zero” or “diet” would also be dangerous for health: people who drink at least one drink a day are 3 times more likely than others to have a stroke and / or early senile dementia.
“The consumption of sugary drinks, even if they are light, must remain occasional, suggest the American scientists. To hydrate, nothing is better than a large glass of water. “
