Laundry contain many allergens including residue remains on clothes even after rinsing. Association 60 million Consumers analyzed 25 liquid and capsule detergents. The results show that many efforts remain to be made concerning the improvement of their compositions.
Experts looked for the presence of 203 different chemicals and found that a majority of the products tested contained several potential allergens. This ranges from the preservative of the thiazolinone family, to azo dyes, including surfactants and enzymes. All these substances are known to be allergenic and irritating. They were also found in laundry which nevertheless benefited from the European Ecolabel. These molecules, much criticized, are also part of the composition of hygiene and beauty products, recalls 60 million consumers.
Better results for detergents in capsules
Amazing result, none capsule detergent did not contain substances from the thiazolinone family. The association explains this by the fact that a capsule contains very little detergent and remains tightly closed until washing. Few microbes are likely to develop, so it is not necessary to add preservatives in this format. However, several capsules tested contained potentially irritating surfactants and allergenic fragrances.
A total of 7 detergents were rated “very insufficient” and 4 “insufficient”. The French Syndicate of Allergists (Syfal) explains that it is preferable not to use this kind of detergent for babies, because their skin behaves “like a sponge”.
