An MRI scan every year to see if a tumor is hidden somewhere or if a blood vessel is bursting somewhere. And immediately an extensive blood test whether all substances are still at the right level. The Ministry of Health and doctors’ organizations see dangers, such as overdiagnosis. But would you want a full body scan every year?
The Ministry of Health explains the Dutch ban: ‘This extensive screening of the whole body can lead to overdiagnosis: an abnormality is found that would never have led to problems without screening.’ This preventive screening is therefore not reimbursed in the Netherlands. The doctors are also critical. But the ministry keeps the door ajar and says it is still thinking about these preventive medical examinations, because more and more people have their health checked for a fee.
