Seasonal fruit and vegetables cause less CO2 emissions than varieties that come to the Netherlands by plane or that are grown in a heated greenhouse. Do you take this into account?
Vegetables are most sustainable if they come from the country in the Netherlands, or grow in a greenhouse that does not require much heating, according to the Nutrition Center. That means you eat asparagus, pak choi, broad beans and carrots in the spring and cauliflower, carrots and rhubarb in the summer. You can eat apples all year round, just like tomatoes, bananas or citrus fruits, even if they don’t come from the Netherlands. But strawberries for Christmas? That’s not a good idea. Blackberries, currants, cherries and strawberries belong in the summer.
How’s that for you? Do you have an eye for the seasons when you buy fruit and vegetables? And do you know which vegetables belong in a certain season?
