The first “spermbots” arrive. Each robot is made up of a sperm embedded in a nanotube. Thus guided, they will make it easier to fertilize an egg during assisted reproduction.
They are already nicknamed the “sperm nanorobots” or “fertility cyborgs”. Regardless of their name, they seem to be the new weapon science invented against infertility. This technique which comes to us from our German neighbors is actually called the “ spermbot “. And it is an assembly between a real sperm and a nanotube.
A new tool for assisted reproduction
The study in question has just been published in the British scientific journal New Scientist. This research carried out by the Institute for Nanosciences in Dresden (Germany) made it possible to develop the first “ spermbots “, or a sperm whose head is embedded in a metallic nanotube. Thanks to this process, the spermbot can be guided by a magnetic field. Guided in this way, these sperm cyborgs can, for example, make it easier to fertilize an egg in the context of medically assisted procreation.
Another utility, “that of more easily delivering a drug to any part of the body,” explains Oliver Schmidt, the scientist behind the experiment. The latter also recalls that the spermatozoa are a very interesting option because they are safe for the human body, and don’t need from no source external power supply. Finally, they can also swim through viscous liquids, describes the scientist.
