If the Social Security is losing less money, it is quite simply because it is spending less and less.
Social Security reimburses less
For its sickness branch, the Social Security has been making savings for several years by reimbursing less and less well for care, in particular by deferring part of the support to mutuals. This is why the mutuals increased their prices again at the beginning of 2016. Result, the health insurance branch should lose 5.2 billion euros in 2016, 1.6 billion less than last year.
Social security: the family branch, also involved
The other significant saving item for Social Security is the family branch, whose deficit will also be reduced by 500 million euros if all goes well, in 2016, to settle at 1 billion. It is the means-tested distribution of family allowances that has made it possible to reduce its deficit.
The fact remains that the total Social Security deficit for 2016 will still be 9.1 billion euros this year.. It has been in deficit since 1990, with a slight return to the green from 1998 to 2001. The cumulative debt of Social Security still stands at more than 125 billion euros.
