The idea of the “Sleeping beauty diet” was born on pro-anorexia sites. Women and young girls share their experiences and tips on how to stop eating. This diet, which consists of sleeping as much as possible to avoid any temptation to eat, is already alarming doctors and is proving to be very dangerous for health.
Risks of addiction…
In an article from Broadly, Tracey Wade, a professor at Flinders University of Psychology in Australia, says addiction to sedatives is just one of the potential harmful consequences of this diet. “If people have to rely on anxiolytics to sleep, like benzodiazepines (molecules present in Valium, Xanax, Lexomil) which are addictive, this puts the person in danger of addiction because he will need higher and higher doses to obtain the desired effect”.
… and social isolation
In addition to being dangerous for health because it can lead to addictions to sedatives or even overdoses, the “sleeping beauty diet” also has consequences on social life. “If you sleep 20 hours a day, you no longer have social interaction, you isolate yourself, and naturally that has an impact on your mood,” explains professor Tracey Wade in Broadly. He adds that “this rhythm of life can lead to depression”. According to him, “This regimen is attracting more and more young girls because it appears to be easy and requires no effort since it consists only of sleeping. On the surface, it seems easily achievable. But how will these women manage the hours? where they will be very hungry and extremely confused with an increase in the rate of undernutrition?”.
Regarding weight loss, there is no evidence today that this method actually works. According to Tracey Wade, the results of the “sleeping beauty diet” are even very unlikely. Upon awakening, the body may ask for even more food and there is a risk of sinking into “blinge-eating”an eating disorder that results in the ingestion of massive amounts of food in a very short time.
