Better bedroom ventilation is linked to improved sleep quality.
- Researchers found that higher ventilation rates in bedrooms were associated with better air circulation and lower carbon dioxide concentrations, which promote deeper, less disturbed sleep.
- To increase ventilation in the bedroom, it is recommended to open the windows regularly, even in winter.
- Having quality sleep is essential for the proper functioning of our body.
A recent study found that increasing ventilation in the bedroom can improve sleep, the quality of which is an essential part of maintaining our good health.
Researchers found that higher ventilation rates were associated with better air circulation and lower carbon dioxide concentrations, which promote deeper, less disturbed sleep.
Sleep and bedroom ventilation: a test in real conditions
To study the link between bedroom ventilation and sleep quality, researchers recruited 35 participants aged 27 to 64. These people were screened to ensure that they did not suffer from significant sleep problems and did not regularly use sleeping pills. The study was carried out in bedrooms located in Belgium. All selected rooms were equipped with centralized mechanical ventilation systems that allowed the ventilation rate to be changed without informing the occupants.
The study began with a one-week baseline measurement period. During this initial week, no interventions were carried out. This allowed the researchers to establish the natural conditions in each participant’s bedroom, including existing ventilation rate, air quality and sleep patterns.
A room with good ventilation generates deeper sleep
After the week of baseline measurements, the researchers implemented a series of interventions in the form of changing ventilation rates. Over the next three weeks, each participant was subjected to different ventilation rates: low, moderate and high. Importantly, the order in which these conditions were applied was carefully balanced to minimize bias and ensure fairness.
The study results significantly showed that increasing ventilation in the bedroom was associated with improved sleep quality. Participants experienced fewer nighttime awakenings and reported deeper, less disturbed sleep when the ventilation rate was higher. These observations suggest that improving bedroom air quality may have positive implications for our overall well-being.
How to have good ventilation in your room?
To increase ventilation in the bedroom, it is recommended to open windows regularly to allow adequate air circulation. Also make sure your ventilation system is in good working order and clean. It is also important to avoid clutter in the bedroom, as this can hinder air circulation.
