A recent American study confirms the importance of having breakfast before starting the day: skipping this meal would increase the risk of cardiovascular accident or even death.
Skipping breakfast is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease mortality
If you are one of those people who prefers to gain a few minutes of sleep in the morning at the expense of breakfast, know that you are putting your health at risk! According to a recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, not having breakfast in the morning would increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, or even dying from it. ” Skipping breakfast has been associated with a significant increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease ”Indeed report the authors of the study.
To reach this conclusion, the researchers followed 6,550 Americans aged 40 to 75 who participated in the National Nutrition Monitoring Survey from 1988 to 1994. Among them, 5% never ate breakfast, 11% rarely, 25% on certain days and 59% every day.
87% increased risk of cardiovascular accident
By combining this data with other factors including age, sex, race, socioeconomic status, diet, lifestyle and of course their general health, the researchers determined that those who never ate breakfast in the morning had an 87% higher risk of dying from a cardiovascular event than those who took it every morning.
In a statement, one of the study’s authors, Wei Bao, explains in particular that people who do not eat breakfast develop bad eating habits, causing them to eat more during the day, which increases bad cholesterol and blood pressure, and therefore the risk of cardiovascular problems. According to him, ” Morning calories jump-start the body’s metabolism and give people the energy and nutrients they need to start the day right “.
