The longest serving team boss in Formula 1 ever
Sir Frank Williams has passed away at the age of 79. With a total of 50 years, he is the longest-serving team boss in Formula 1 ever. He led two teams. With Williams, Sir Frank won seven drivers’ titles and nine constructors’ championships.
His team – run by daughter Claire – was sold to investment firm Dorilton Capital earlier this year. In 1986 Sir Frank Williams suffered a spinal cord injury in a car accident. In 2012, he stepped down from the Williams board and passed the baton to Claire. He held on to the title of team boss until the sale.
“It is with great sadness that the team, on behalf of the Williams family, can confirm the passing of Sir Frank Williams CBE, founder and former team principal of Williams Racing, at the age of 79. After being hospitalized on Friday, Sir Frank passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by his family,” Williams said in a statement.
F1 boss Stefano Domenicali says: “He was a true giant of our sport who overcame the most difficult challenges in life and fought every day to win on and off the track. We have lost a much loved and respected member of the F1 family and he will be greatly missed.”
