A few months ago, the National Health Security Agency (ANSES) issued a report pointing the finger at the risk of infection for Fish pedicure enthusiasts. Basins in which colonies of garra rufa fish are splashing cannot in fact be filled with water with disinfectant as this would kill the fish. However, this lack of correct disinfection increases the risk of transmission of a bacterial infection.
This is most likely what happened to an American woman whose toenails fell out one by one, six months after doing a Fish pedicure. Worried, she went to the doctor who quickly made the link between this case of onychomadesis (the fall of the entire nail) and the Fish pedicure. Moreover, a large number of states in the United States have banned this practice, pointing out that the level of hygiene required for the water in the ponds is incompatible with the survival of the fish.
