Here is an original question that scientists ask themselves: what is the average duration of sexual intercourse? According to a study of 500 heterosexual couples around the world, the duration ranges from 33 seconds to 44 minutes. Explanations.
- The average time for a sexual intercourse is 5.4 minutes.
- These data are quite variable, particularly depending on the country.
If you’re in a relationship, chances are you’ve asked yourself this question: Is the duration of your sexual relations with your partner about average?
According to a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicinethe average ejaculation time after vaginal penetration varies from one couple to another, ranging from 33 seconds to… 44 minutes!
Sex: average intercourse time is 5.4 minutes
To arrive at this astonishing result, the researchers conducted a study on 500 couples from five different countries: the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Spain, Turkey and the United States. The men were at least 18 years old, had had a stable heterosexual relationship for at least 6 months and had regular sexual intercourse. No participant was selected or declined due to ejaculatory status or comorbidities. But, they had to indicate if they were circumcised or if they used condoms.
The couples were asked to time the duration of their intercourse over a period of 4 weeks in order to measure the average time to ejaculation after vaginal penetration.
Results: the average duration of coitus is 5.4 minutes. The time before ejaculation occurs decreases significantly with age, dropping from 6.5 minutes among 18-30 year olds to 4.3 minutes among 51 year olds and over.
Ejaculation: variable results depending on the country
The average duration of intercourse also varies by country, with Turkey having the lowest median (3.7 minutes).
Another interesting finding: contrary to popular belief, wearing a condom does not visibly modify the duration of sexual intercourse before ejaculation. However, this is not the case with circumcision. Outside of Turkey, intercourse lasts an average of 6.0 minutes for circumcised men versus 6.7 minutes for uncircumcised men.
However, the authors of the study point out that these results must be put into perspective because each couple measured the duration of their sexual relationship themselves, which partly distorts the results. Indeed, on the one hand, it is not always easy to use a stopwatch without outside help, especially when one is about to have a sexual relationship, and on the other hand, it should be noted that it is socially more acceptable to be an enduring lover.
