The macho humor would allow men who do not trust themselves to hide behind the bulwark of masculinity. A scientific study that has been interested in the subject has just proved it.
Chauvinistic humor would allow men to assert their virility
A man’s humor would reveal his level of self-esteem. This is suggested by scientists at Western Carolina University in the United States, who have taken an interest in the questionable and widespread jokes that are those concerning women and homosexuals.
In an online survey of 387 heterosexual men, and revealed by the Eurekalert site, these researchers attempted to determine the profile of men who adhere to this type of humor and came to the conclusion according to which macho jokes allow men who doubt their virility to assert themselves within the male community.
Humor is a good indicator of self-awareness
To establish this conclusion, participants were invited to answer questions about their personality and their ability to discriminate, or not, women or homosexuals. During this test, the men had to give their opinion on several statements such as ” women seek more power by taking control over men “.
Cross-checking this data, the authors of this publication revealed that sexist humor was a good indicator of men’s self-awareness and self-confidence. For Emma O’Connor, main author of this study, “ men who don’t trust their own masculinity play with sexist and homophobic humor because they think it conveys a more manly image of them », We can read on the Eurekalert site.
