Run on affordable smartwatches, Apple remains most popular

Smartwatches that cost less than 100 euros were sold just six times more than last year. This can partly be explained by the corona pandemic, according to Counterpoint Research. People are more aware of their health and the fitness functions of the smart clocks help with this.

Compared to the second quarter of 2020 measure the market researcher a growth of no less than 547 percent in the segment of smartwatches under 100 euros. These cheaper watches are increasingly equipped with advanced functions such as a heart rate and oxygen monitor, which makes them attractive to a larger audience.

At the same time, many countries are easing their lockdown measures, which means that people are going out more and more and like to have their outdoor activities registered by a smart watch.

Distribution

With a market share of 28 percent, Apple remains the main supplier of wearables, due to the success of the Apple Watch in the United States in particular. Half of all Apple Watch wearers are American. However, Apple does give up something compared to last year, while Samsung is catching up.

Huawei is still the most popular smartwatch brand after Apple, although a decrease has also been measured here. Garmin just sneaks into the top 5, instead of Amazfit.

Three Apples

Overall, smartwatch sales rose 27 percent worldwide in the quarter, compared to the same period last year. The Apple Watch Series 6 has been delivered most often. After that, the Apple Watch Series SE, Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2, Apple Watch Series 3 and Imoo Z6-4G are the most in demand, respectively.

India is the fastest growing market, thanks to smart watches manufactured by local brands.
