Not all companies are suffering from the consequences of the corona crisis. Much of the world’s population is forced to stay at home, and at least there is one company that benefits: Netflix recently released its first quarter figures.
Thanks to the quarantine, more people have subscribed to the popular streaming service. Netflix saw its first quarter subscriber count rise to 183 million people worldwide, a total increase of 16 million.
Subscribers were especially killing time with the series’ fourth season La Casa de Papel and the dating reality show Love is Blind. The true crime documentary Tiger King managed to captivate more than 64 million people in the first month: a striking and unprecedented number of viewers for a documentary. The story surrounding the striking zoo owner Joe Exotic has developed into a real hype.
Also the fourth season of the hugely popular Spanish La Casa de Papel is a hit. With 65 million viewers, the series was even slightly more popular than Tiger King. The first two seasons of the series about the biggest heist in Spanish history were only shown on Spanish national television, and after Netflix bought the rights, the company produced further seasons.
However, to count as a viewer, the content does not have to be viewed in full: Netflix counts a subscriber as an active viewer when more than 2 minutes of a movie, series or documentary has been watched.
Netflix still expects a decline in future figures: “We are currently seeing an increase in subscribers and worldwide viewing figures. We expect this number to decrease somewhat after people are no longer advised or even required to stay at home. We hope this period of home quarantine will be over soon.”
