Alcohol, coffee, offal, seafood… Banishing certain foods from your diet can prevent painful gout attacks. This inflammatory rheumatic disease affects 1 to 2% of the adult population.
Uric acid is a metabolic waste product from the digestion of certain foods. When its level is too high in the blood, it triggers painful gout attacks. To eliminate this inflammatory rheumatic disease, it is therefore necessary to avoid consuming foods rich in uric acid, namely poultry (especially the skin), beef, offal, fish and seafood. Same reasoning for drinks : alcohol, coffee and liquids containing fructose (sodas, industrial fruit juices, etc.) should be banned.
low fat foods
“The links between sugar intake and gout are fairly well established thanks to a large international cohort. This study showed that the intake of sodas was associated with a risk of developing the disease via an increase in uric acid or chronic hyperuricemia, which is the basis of the disease”, explains to the Figaro Professor Pascal Richette, rheumatologist at the Lariboisière hospital in Paris.
It is also preferable to consume foods low in fat, since a high fat intake promotes the appearance of so-called ketone bodies, which hinder the elimination of uric acid by the kidneys. Exit sauces and fried foods.
Dairy products
Dairy products, on the other hand, can be consumed without moderation. They stimulate the elimination of uric acid by an effect attributed to lactic proteins (casein, lactalbumin). Protein foods of plant origin are also important, as they make up for the reduction in the consumption of meat and fish.
“We know that diets have little impact on gout, nevertheless nuances Professor Pascal Richette. It is a question of having a reasonable consumption of sodas, to be limited to a maximum of one per week, and not to fall into the reverse excess by depriving yourself of everything because it will have little effect on uric acid”.
1-2% of the adult population suffers from gout
A gout attack usually comes on suddenly and unexpectedly – often during sleep – and is characterized by severe pain and inflammation of the affected joints (frequently the base of the big toe). Crystals can also form in the tissues outside the joints, which also causes painful inflammation.
About 1-2% of the adult population suffers from gout, with the trend rising. Men are more often affected than women. As you get older, the percentage also increases (up to 7% in men and 3% in women).
