Alfa Romeo Racing has just confirmed that Kimi Räikkönen has tested positive for the coronavirus. According to the team, the Finnish driver has no symptoms yet and is still in good spirits. He was immediately placed in isolation in his hotel room and as far as is known, no teammates have been infected yet. Reserve driver Robert Kubica will replace him at Alfa Romeo this weekend.
For Robert Kubica it is the 98th F1 race and his first GP in an Alfa Romeo. He has been reserve driver with the team since 2020 after giving up his seat at Williams. The Polish driver has already practiced three times in Alfa Romeo’s C41 car and thus already has some experience with the F1 car. There have been rumors for a while that Dutchman Nyck de Vries will get a seat at Alfa Romeo next year, but this weekend is in any case not yet the time for the F2 and Formula E champion to sit down for a test.
No more GP of the Netherlands for Räikkönen
Kimi announced a few days ago that he will retire from F1 after this season. The Dutch GP was therefore his last chance to race in an F1 car at Zandvoort. Fortunately, he was able to do two training sessions yesterday to experience the track. A big advantage for the driver is that he will at least no longer have to do interviews this weekend. If he is declared healthy next week, he will have nine races to go this season according to the F1 calendar.
