1er November 2004 – While Clostridium difficile bacteria are spreading not only in Quebec, but across North America, a new study, conducted in Quebec, will demonstrate the effectiveness of probiotics to fight this epidemic.
This is what Dr Michel Boivin, gastroenterologist at the Saint-Luc pavilion of the Center hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM), by revealing the results of a study conducted on 89 patients at the Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital in Montreal, which will be soon published. This showed the efficacy of two specific strains of probiotics, namely Lactobacillus acidophilus and the Lactobacillus casei CL 1285, in the battle against the Clostridium difficile. Indeed, not only the It’s hard was significantly less present in patients treated with the yogurt marketed by Bio-K, but they were discharged from the hospital two days earlier than the other study participants.
This research would confirm the results of other studies demonstrating the ability of probiotics to treat diarrhea, especially those caused by taking antibiotics. Moreover, the Dr Boivin pointed out that 20 to 50% of diarrhea is caused by taking antibiotics. These provide a favorable environment for the propagation of It’s hard, this intruding bacteria taking the place of the good bacteria destroyed in the digestive system by the antibiotic.
Moreover, the Dr Boivin has indicated that probiotics may also show promise in alleviating symptoms of bowel syndrome or irritable bowel syndrome. This discomfort, which affects 30% of the population, would often appear following an episode of acute diarrhea, such as the tourista. Although probiotics have given mixed results so far, it is believed that further research may demonstrate their positive effect in this regard.
Note that there are other conditions that respond to probiotics. Thus, constipation – especially in the elderly – could be relieved with probiotics. Ulcerative colitis as well as Crohn’s disease are also promising research topics for probiotics.
