Women are always poorly informed and still have a number of misconceptions about pregnancy and fertilityaccording to a recent survey from Yale University published in the trade journal Fertility ans Sterility.
This survey was carried out among 1000 women of reproductive age. Thanks to their precise questionnaire, the researchers were able to determine the general level of knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and practices in matters of conception and pregnancy.
Misconceptions of women about pregnancy
The results of this survey are surprising. Indeed, 50% of the women questioned do not know that folic acid supplementation is recommended to prevent congenital malformations, more than 25% of them do not know the possible consequences on conception, sexually transmitted infections, ‘obesity, smoking, or the consequences of irregular periods on fertility. 20% of them are not aware of the negative effects of age on fertility, pregnancy complications, miscarriages and chromosomal abnormalities.
And only 10% of women know that intercourse before ovulation, rather than after, increases the chances of getting pregnant.
And according to these women, some sex positions can help get pregnant and it is important to have sex more than once a day.
40% of women of childbearing age are concerned about their ability to become pregnant, yet half of them have never discussed these issues with their doctor and 30% of them with their gynecologist or sage -wife.
Dr Jessica Illuzzi, associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the Yale School of Medicine concludes that “it is imperative that the dialogue on these issues with healthcare professionals resumes, given the ‘evolution of the place of the family in our society. “
