The offer you can’t refuse?
Nice work there at Polestar. They have been putting Polestar 2’s on the Dutch roads for a year now and they have done so about 3,600 times. There are brands, especially new ones, that can only dream of that. And it could even be that things will soon be even better: these new variant(s) should take care of that.
Polestar actually only had a top model on offer. Then you immediately got a large 78-kWh battery and two fat electric motors that blasted 408 hp against it. Nice, sure, but batteries are expensive and you immediately had a starting price of about 54k – no cat pee. In addition, not everyone will immediately need that 480 kilometers range, and that power is also a bit for many people overkill. For all those ‘problems’ there is now a solution with two new versions that only have one electric motor (on the front axle, please note): a Long Range with that 78 kWh battery, and a Standard Range with a 64 kWh package.
That Long Range has the advantage that, because it now only has to interfere with the front wheels, it goes further than its twin-engine friend: 540 instead of 480 kilometers. Of course, he delivers less power: that is now 231 hp, still good for a sprint to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds (instead of 4.7 seconds). And it is therefore cheaper: it saves 4,000 euros. Nice slap money, right?
We hit the road with the Polestar 2 Standard Range Single Motor
The Standard Range we drove with, therefore, has a smaller battery: 64 kWh. That of course weighs less, which is why it can achieve the same performance with slightly less power: its engine produces 225 hp (the same torque of 330 Nm). The range also decreases, of course, which is 440 kilometers according to the WLTP methods. Let’s face it: that is usually ample. For rangers and holidaymakers: with a fast charger you are back to 80 percent in 35 minutes from a 10 percent battery. With a normal charger you will be busy overnight.
How does the Polestar 2 Standard Range drive with only one engine?
Well, we’ve always praised the Polestar 2 for the fact that it’s the best-driving EV we know after the Porsche Taycan. Aren’t you neutering him a bit by stripping him of one engine and roughly 170 hp? Well, it’s great. The semi-sports car performance of the Long Range Dual Motor is indeed gone, but you still have a pretty nice one hot hatch about.
Instantly available power and torque means you can always provide significant acceleration; driving off, overtaking or merging is still smoother than many people were used to from their petrol car. And the ingenious chassis of the Polestar 2 does not change. That remains comfortable and communicative, a combination that we certainly seem to encounter less and less with EVs. And almost every EV manufacturer can take an example from that control: that’s how it should be, boys and girls, with a pleasant amount of weight and sufficient information about what the front wheels experience, without it ever becoming disturbing.
It’s a favorable offer
And the best: with the Standard Range there is another 4 mille off the price, so you can get in from 45,900 euros. With which this Polestar 2 certainly for the doubting business driver (who will also not be insensitive to the fact that Polestar can certainly deliver it this year, before the new addition rules come into effect – that is not the case with every brand) sometimes. sacrifice could be that he can’t refusen.
