Only 20% of patients who must benefit from palliative care have access to it. To put an end to this injustice, Marisol Touraine releases an envelope of 40 million euros.
The Minister of Health, Marisol Touraine announced this Saturday that an additional 40 million euros will be devoted to palliative care in 2016. This envelope should allow the development of special units in France, where “inequalities persist despite significant progress” , explains the ministry.
In fact, in France, only 20% of people who must benefit from palliative care and support to die with dignity have access to it. “Palliative care, which alleviates the suffering of people at the end of life, is a major advance in our contemporary medicine. But access to this care remains very uneven today according to the territories, declared Marisol Touraine. This injustice, both social and territorial, is unacceptable: by committing additional resources to the development of palliative care, we are showing our determination. “
Reduce inequalities and train caregivers
This increase is part of the three-year plan for the development of palliative care and end-of-life support, announced in December 2014 by the President of the Republic. The details of this plan should be presented shortly by Marisol Touraine.
This has four objectives: “to develop local care, at home” thanks to mobile teams, “to create new care units in the most deprived areas”, “to better inform patients so that they are at the heart of decisions ”and“ increase the skills of professionals and stakeholders ”, in particular through training and by strengthening the dissemination of the palliative culture among caregivers.
