Pain is an illness that can affect each of us, and the days of “we must suffer in silence” are over. Now, pain is better understood and there are solutions to alleviate it, or even make it disappear. Pain is therefore not inevitable.
Pain yes, but laughter too
The creators of the comic therefore wanted to talk about it in a tone of humor, and especially not that of mockery.
Dr Patrick Sichère is a rheumatologist and consultant at the pain center at Lariboisière hospital. Author of several works, he has teamed up with Hervé Darmenton, better known under the name of Achdé, author of comics, illustrator and screenwriter (designer in particular of the very well-known comic strip “Lucky Luke”), but also a former radio manipulator (the medicine so he also knows).
Pain in all its forms
From the introduction, the reader is put into the bath. “How painful are you?” » is the question that appears on the first page of the book. Many answers are possible. The ball is in your court: it’s up to you to decide whether you’re a big “cozy guy” or a strong guy who doesn’t know…
The painful images and stories follow one another. Surprisingly, we talk about poppies, hallucinogens, opium…, but also three wise men, Alice in Wonderland, Jules Verne, Baudelaire… We finally put words and drawings on the different types of pain. Everyone finds themselves there or thinks of a person around them.
Pain treated with scientific rigor but also in a humorous way
The veil is thus lifted on numerous causes of pain and various and varied illnesses. Migraines, for example, are dissected, teeth put under a magnifying glass, neuropathic pain dissected, fibromyalgia demystified. And even the toes find shoes that fit them. Without forgetting, among other things, lower back pain, hemorrhoids and anal fissures! And also the treatments (painkillers, bloodletting, transcutaneous neurostimulation (TENS), etc.) and support measures (hypnosis, sport, etc.) which are carefully explained.
And all this in a funny and caring way. This lightness even makes us forget the few naked characters who appear and could shock the most sensitive.
Pain finely deciphered by a comic book
Excellent work by Dr Sichère and Achdé who managed to convey a message about suffering without any pain, with tact and delicacy. In short, a comic book that feels good. And let’s remember that laughter is a releaser of endorphins (chemical substances produced by the brain), these natural and effective painkillers (in addition, of course, to appropriate treatment). In this case, why deprive yourself of it!
