After the Manta GSe Elektromod concept and an official announcement illustration, the future Opel Manta-e is gradually taking shape. The electric “coupe” SUV will be produced at the plant in Melfi, Italy, along with the DS 7 Crossback. Both will share their platform with the upcoming Peugeot 3008 (P64).
Riding the wave of enthusiasm caused by the presentation of the Manta GSe Elektromod concept, a Manta from the 1970s in restomod and retrofit version, Opel announced last summer that the Manta was back in its range. No sportswoman on the horizon, however; the upcoming model will be called Manta-e and it will be an electric “coupe” SUV. We can already guess some design elements.
The Manta-e at the antipodes of its inspiration
The original Manta inspired the “Vizor” front end of the current Opels, inaugurated by the last Mokka. We should therefore find this arrangement on the Manta-e with, among other things, sharp lights integrated at the ends of a black lacquered band. The illustration published by Opel as a teaser announced a black pavilion describing an arc of a circle Audi style and fenders highlighted by front extractors and rear side air intakes. The abrupt cutouts of these vents could contrast with the fluid and clean silhouette of the vehicle.
The Manta-e, flagship of Opel’s electrification
Announced for the middle of this decade, the Manta-e will only be offered with a “zero emission” engine, like all Opels planned for Europe from 2028. It will be based on the future STLA Medium modular platform of the Stellantis group, a base capable of to accommodate batteries from 87 to 104 kWh and thus offer up to 700 km of autonomy according to its designers. The list of future electric powertrains from Stellantis announces for the STLA Medium an engine named EDM # 2 providing between 170 and 245 hp. The Manta-e will obviously have technical “cousins” from Stellantis (DS 7 Crossback, DS SUV-coupé and an SUV from Lancia), with whom it will share its platform, which will be inaugurated in early 2024 by the Peugeot 3008 III. It will also benefit from the new STLA Brain software architecture and a high-tech cockpit (STLA Smart cockpit), the software of which will be developed by Foxconn. The Opel Manta-e will be assembled in Italy, at the Melfi plant, alongside the upcoming DS 7 Crossback.
