Ten days ago, Roland Marissael, 85, was a healthy octogenarian. But during a family meal, he swallows a radish askew … and his dentures at the same time. Immediately taken to the hospital by his family, the doctor concludes that he was on the wrong track and sends him home. The old man can’t speak anymore? “It’s a start of Alzheimer’s,” says the intern.
But the condition of the octogenarian deteriorates rapidly. He can no longer speak, barely manages to breathe. He was again taken to Dunkirk hospital, this time by Samu. As soon as they arrive, the family reports that the dentures are probably stuck in their throats and calls for an X-ray. Without success.
For six days, Roland will slowly waste away. “He was still touching his throat, he was in such pain that as soon as we tried to touch his throat he would push us away”, tells her daughter-in-law to The voice of the North.
Until the doctor in charge of the department returned from vacation and finally ordered the throat X-ray which showed that the dentures were indeed stuck in the vocal cords.
Operated in emergency, Roland Marissael is now placed in intensive care, in serious condition.
An internal investigation must be carried out with the various departments of the Dunkirk hospital center in order to find out what really happened and to determine each person’s responsibilities.
