The label war is declared. While the Minister of Social Affairs and Health has provided for, in the health bill, the adoption of a color code that informs consumers about the nutritional qualities of food, the Federation of Commerce and Distribution Enterprises (FCD), to which the vast majority of distributors (with the exception of Leclerc and Intermarché) belong, has just presented its own food labeling, based on food consumption patterns. This time, no more pellets but arrows. Thus a food with optimal nutritional qualities will be labeled with a green arrow, recommending daily consumption. Conversely, a food with a more questionable nutritional balance will be labeled with a purple arrow, recommending occasional consumption.
This labeling would gradually be affixed to the branded products of the various distributors, which represents a third of the sales of hyper and supermarkets.
“Today, a good diet does not work by excluding such or such food, it is necessary to reason more by portion and frequency of consumption”, declares the FCD which considers that the labeling envisaged by the Minister of Health is too stigmatizing.
