Windows 11 can still be installed on computers that do not meet the system requirements on paper, but Microsoft will not offer future updates for it. Things like security patches, component updates and drivers must be installed manually; the Windows Update route no longer works.
That explains Microsoft to the site The Verge, although the company does not provide any further reason for withholding automatic updates. The system requirements of Windows 11 are quite strict, which can mainly be traced back to the list of supported processors. PCs with CPUs that are roughly older than 2017 cannot be upgraded to Windows 11.
However, Windows 11 can be installed on these systems, for example by downloading a Windows 11 ISO. Good news for those who want it, but keeping the operating system up-to-date in this way doesn’t sound very user-friendly if Microsoft does indeed choose to throttle automatic Windows Updates.
As in the old days
For many users, that will take some getting used to, because the update process in Windows 10 is just so streamlined. By the way, Microsoft plans to release a feature update (feature update) for Windows 11 once a year. But in between, there are often smaller updates that, among other things, protect your PC against the latest cyber threats.
Microsoft has an improved version of its PC Health Check App online, which scans whether your PC meets the requirements of Windows 11. It is currently only available for Windows Insiders to download. The tool was previously taken offline because it resulted in more questions than answers due to the lack of information.
