A night sweat is characterized by excessive production of perspiration, which forces the person concerned to have to change their clothes and bed linen, even when the temperature of the room is not hot. This sweating is accompanied (and can generate) sleep disorders. If repeated frequently, this phenomenon may be a sign of a particular disorder.
Why does the body sweat?
Perspiration is a phenomenon that allows the body to maintain a temperature of around 37°. The sweat glands secrete sweat (composed mainly of water) through the pores of the skin in order to cool the body. This phenomenon occurs naturally when it is hot or a person performs physical exertion.
However, factors such as menopause, food, certain pathologies or even stresscan increase the production of sweat during the night.
What to do in case of night sweats?
To limit the risk of sweating, it is possible to arrange your sleeping environment. This involves maintaining an appropriate temperature in the bedroom (ideally around 18-19°C) and wearing light pyjamas, made from natural materials.
It is also recommended:
- of drink waterso that the body remains well hydrated;
- ofavoid consuming arousing beverages (coffee, alcohol) or a heavy or too spicy meal, before sleeping;
- ofwait at least 2 to 3 hours before going to bed ;
- to practice regularly relaxation exercises.
These tips are intended to help create a calm and pleasant environment, to help you fall asleep and limit the risk of night sweats.
There are not always causes to justify the appearance of night sweats. However, it is advisable to consult a doctor when this phenomenon occurs frequently, particularly when accompanied by other symptoms.
