I am a healthy 47 year old woman (1.75 m and 66 kg.). I like sports and also do some strength training. But when I do leg lifts or knee lifts with my leg bent, my hip joint does not roll smoothly. I only have this when I lift with the knee turned out. It doesn’t hurt, but it is an annoying feeling and it gives a kind of hollow plop sound. Is this related to initial wear and tear? According to physiotherapists I am somewhat hypermobile. For example, sometimes a vertebra is crooked. Is there a connection between that?

The feeling you describe can have several causes. Usually it’s harmless. I think there’s the greatest chance that a tendon will jump. We call this a coxa saltans, a clicking hip. A tendon of your thigh muscles then gets caught behind a bone structure, as it were. At one point he shoots over the bone; you feel it and it can make noise. This is harmless. It is also possible that the pinching sensation indicates the beginning of wear and tear on the hip joint, and it is also possible that there is a small, loose piece of bone in your hip joint. If the complaints worsen, you can have a photo taken. I see no relationship with your possible hypermobility or crooked spine. Also a health question? Click here and ask the question to an expert!
