Our mutuals will cost us (even) more in 2022. Le Parisien has just revealed a study of the Mutualité Française announcing a average increase in the price of mutuals of 3.4%, after surveying 32 organizations that provide coverage for 17 million French people. What explains this rise in prices?
The daily stresses that 50% of complementary health take 2.4%, and others go up to 5.3%. Only 20% of policyholders will not see their rate increase. For two years, the increase in these prices was capped at 2.6%, this year the mutuals had been asked by the State not to inflate subscriptions and to return part of the contributions to members. This was explained by the fact that the confinements made them save money (overall, we went to consult less than usual). So why is the complete opposite happening?
100% health costs more than expected
First because the momentum is at the increase of everything : people are getting older and care is more expensive. We are better cared for, more long-term conditions are taken care of, medicine is making progress that costs money (in terms of equipment, for example, but also drugs). In fact, the health budget is not at all the same as twenty years ago, it has almost doubled, and in fact, the mutuals have followed suit.
On the other hand, a recent measurement, 100% healthcosts a lot. It aims to allow the French to be fully reimbursed for hearing aids, dental prostheses and glasses (on certain criteria), and it is very expensive for mutuals. A balance had been calculated, whereby the optical sector would save money to compensate for more dental and hearing care, but it did not go as planned.
