The Malian government announced on Tuesday May 4 that one of its young nationals gave birth to nine babies at once.
- “So far, the mother and children are doing well,” said Malian Minister of Health Fanta Siby.
- The Minister “congratulates the medical teams of Mali and Morocco, whose professionalism is at the origin of the happy outcome of this pregnancy”.
We don’t even dare to imagine how the return home will go from a logistical point of view. According to the Malian government, relayed by AFP, one of its young nationals would have given birth on Tuesday, May 4 to… nine babies!
The delivery took place in Morocco, by caesarean section. All the children (five girls and four boys) are doing well, as is the mother. The story is all the more extraordinary since Halima Cissé never expected to give birth “than” of seven babies, the other two having not shown the end of their noses during the ultrasounds.
If the information is confirmed, the young Malian would hold the world record for multiple pregnancies, dethroning the very famous Nadya Suleman, alias “Octomium”who gave birth to eight children at once in January 2009.
The fetuses of multiple pregnancies are more fragile
Halima Cissé, originally from Timbuktu, was reportedly first cared for in Bamako before being transferred to Morocco on March 30 to be “better followed”. The chances of survival of the fetuses of multiple pregnancies are indeed lower.
It is not known whether this pregnancy was conceived naturally or with the help of a PMA (medically assisted procreation), which markedly increases the rate of multiple pregnancies in the world. While the multiple pregnancy rate is around 1.5% in the general population, that observed in PMA is around 25% (around 23% of twin pregnancies and 1.5% of triple or quadruple pregnancies).
