July 20, 1999 – Two American researchers, Dr. Stanley Jacob, professor of surgery at the Oregon University of Health Sciences, and neuropsychiatrist Ronald Lawrence, of UCLA School of Medicine in Los Angeles, come from publish a book titled The Miracle of MSM, in which they claim that MSM is as effective as ibuprofen in relieving arthritis pain, but without its side effects.
MSM, an acronym for methylsulfonylmethane, is a sulfur compound present in trace amounts in food. The two doctors, who have studied and prescribed MSM to their patients for nearly 20 years, say it can relieve arthritis pain very effectively, as well as headaches and back pain.
In theory, MSM reduces inflammation by increasing the effect of cortisol, an anti-inflammatory substance naturally produced by the body. However, there have only been two controlled studies to measure the actual effects of MSM. In one of these studies, led by Dr. Lawrence, 80% of arthritis patients taking 2250 mg of MSM daily saw their pain decrease significantly, compared to only 16% in the placebo group.
In the second study, which involved 24 people, Dr. Jacob found that taking 6000 mg of MSM daily was as effective as taking 600 mg of ibuprofen three times a day for relieving pain in the stomach. osteoarthritis. However, neither of these studies have been published yet and just about all that is known about MSM comes from the results these two doctors have obtained from their patients.
Although there is still little clinical evidence for the effectiveness of this supplement, it is already marketed by two American companies, Whole Foods Brands and Jarrow.
