A group of patients with the Mirena intrauterine device have formed an association. They denounce the side effects of the IUD.
From the Facebook group to the victims association. The patients who developed side effects after fitting the Mirena intrauterine device came together in a new association, the statutes of which have been filed with the Yonne prefecture. Called “IUD Hormones Vigilance”, it aims to group together complaints with a view to possible group action, like the one launched for Dépakine.
Almost 13,000 women have registered on the group Facebook “Victims of the Hormonal IUD MIRENA”, which gave birth to the new association. These patients denounce side effects (dizziness, nausea, headaches, depression, hair loss, ovarian cysts, etc.) linked to the hormonal IUD, some of which do not appear on the information leaflets, according to the complaints expressed on the network.
Lack of information
These women also complain that they were not made aware of the adverse effects of this contraceptive by their gynecologist. The association thus requests “the reassessment of the device concerned and better information on possible side effects,” she said in a press release.
Manufactured by the Bayer laboratory and marketed for nearly 20 years, Mirena is a hormonal intrauterine device that releases a synthetic progestin, levonorgestrel. Very often prescribed by gynecologists, it has gradually replaced copper IUDs, especially for young girls for whom the hormonal method is more appropriate, according to specialists.
ANSM is investigating
Faced with the upsurge in reports of side effects, the ANSM (National Medicines Safety Agency) decided to assess the side effects reported by patients. Its conclusions are not to be expected until June 2017.
In the meantime, the agency wants to be reassuring and specifies that “to date, in view of the available data, the increase and the nature of the declarations do not call into question the benefit / risk ratio of Mirena, which remains positive in its current indications ”.
