According to British celebrity chef and restaurateur Jamie Oliver, milk drinks for children are way too sweet. They are as harmful to him as soft drinks and contribute to the “catastrophe” of childhood obesity in the United Kingdom, as reported The Independent.
Last April, the United Kingdom adopted a tax against drinks containing between 5 and 8 grams of sugar. Milk drinks, falling into the category of dairy products, are not affected. Which is not to Jamie Oliver’s taste, and he makes it known.
Display the number of spoons of sugar
At the beginning of May, he went to the British Parliament accompanied by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstal, also leader, to present their proposal. The two men call for making the clear display of nutritional information on packaging mandatory. In particular, they ask to indicate the number of spoons of sugar contained in each product. It would be a way to help parents find their way around easily.
“The healthiest choice should be the easiest choice,” says Jamie Oliver. The two leaders have brought milk drinks to Parliament which they consider to be far too sweet. They also featured soda bottles. To illustrate the positive impact of the tax, they hung the equivalent in sachets of sugar before and after, revealing a marked reduction in quantity, as shown in the video published by the Guardian.
At the same time, the two chefs with the well-oiled number denounced the promotions of the type “1 bought, 1 offered” pushing the consumption of fatty and sugary foods.
