Sleep earlier for improve fertility. This seems to be paying off, according to researchers at Aarhus University (Denmark). They have shown that early diapers are four times more likely to have “good quality” sperm than those who go to bed later. Their results were presented at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) which was held June 23-26 in Vienna, Austria. They are relayed by the British daily The Independent.
Scientists looked at the sleeping habits of around 100 male volunteers attending Danish fertility clinics. A total of 48 had “good quality” sperm, while 56 had “poor quality” sperm. And finally, men who went to bed before 10:30 p.m. were four times more likely to have healthy sperm than night owls. The figure was 2.75 times compared to those who went to bed at a “normal time”, that is, between 10:30 am and 11:30 am.
Sleep, stress and sperm
But it would seem that the lack of sleep is all the more damaging. Men who slept less than seven hours a night were six times more likely to have “poor quality” semen. Because the nights play a key role in the production of hormones. The stress associated with sleep deprivation can lead to inflammation, an immune system reaction and thus an “attack” of the sperm. The reasons could also “be psychological, because sleep deprived men suffer from moral stress, which can have an impact on fertility”said Professor Hans Jakob Ingerslev, co-author of the study.
While the latter has not yet been published, it may provide advice for individuals having difficulty conceiving, independent experts present at the conference said. Members of the male sex “should think about what keeps them awake and try to change their ways, whether it’s binge-watchering Netflix or sending emails at nightsaid Dr Raj Mathur, gynecology consultant at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust interviewed by The Independent. Going to bed earlier with their partner may also increase their chances of having sex, thus improving their chances of success. “
