After the death in Poitiers of a 32-year-old woman from the consequences measles, the victim’s mother expresses her anger and incomprehension. Yolande Riquelmé maintains that her daughter Jessica contracted the virus in the emergency room of the University Hospital Center (CHU) in Poitiers. “Jessica suffered from obesity, she never went out, because she didn’t dare. The only time she went out was to accompany her father and me to the Poitiers University Hospital. that she might have contracted measles!”
According to the Poitiers University Hospital, Jessica is one of five people who “have been able to contract the diseasein contact with another patient at the Poitiers University Hospital when the first cases appeared”.
If the CHU claims to have put in place preventive measures such as wearing a mask in areas at risk of contamination, Yolande refutes this idea at the microphone of France bleu Poitou. According to her, the device to limit the risk of infection was insufficient, she specifies in a daily testimony press center : “It was at the time of the measles epidemic, there were people everywhere waiting for that. They had not yet put on the protective masks, there were no prevention messages, they did afterwards. I took her to the emergency room on February 1, she was blue, she had a fever of 41°C! My daughter was one of those children who had missed out on vaccinations. At that time, we told us that it was not necessary.”
Adults not immune to the virus
The measles epidemic continues to rage in New Aquitaine where 269 cases have been identified to date. A quarter of them required hospitalization, four of which are in intensive care. The majority of people were not vaccinated against measles according to the Regional Health Agency of New Aquitaine. Health authorities recall the importance of vaccination against this virus in adults in order to prevent the spread of the epidemic. Healthcare professionals are no exception and are encouraged to update their vaccination.
Measles is one of the 11 compulsory vaccines for children since January 1, 2018.
