- From January 1 to December 31, 2023, 117 cases of measles were declared in France (compared to respectively 15, 16 and 240 contaminations during the years 2022, 2021 and 2020).
Public health France has just presented all the measles surveillance indicators over the last year.
From January 1 to December 31, 2023, 117 cases of measles were declared in France (compared to respectively 15, 16 and 240 contaminations during the years 2022, 2021 and 2020).
16 departments reported at least one case of measles
In total, 16 departments reported at least one case of measles. “The highest incidence rate was observed, unusually, among young adolescents (10-14 years): it represents 58% of reported cases,” specify the experts. “The incidence rate among infants under one year of age has remained stable compared to previous years with a limited number of babies affected (only 5)” they add.
Seven epidemic outbreaks were observed in 2023. They affected schools, family circles and hospital services. “The most important episode was that reported in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpe, with 64 cases of measles reported between August and November 2023,” details Public Health France.
“A notable increase in imported measles cases was observed in 2023”
Still on the year 2023, “a notable increase in imported measles cases was observed, more than half of which were not vaccinated”, can also be read in the report. These patients came from fifteen different countries and from all continents, with the exception of the Americas.
“These cases generated chains of transmission on French territory leading to the occurrence of 4 outbreaks of varying size (from 2 to 64 cases in total), which testifies to the resumption of the circulation of measles internationally” , we also learn by consulting the report.
27 people suffering from measles were hospitalized in 2023, including two in the intensive care unit. Hospitalizations mainly concerned children under 5 years old and adults over 30 years old. Twelve profiles presented a complication, including 9 pneumonia.
Finally, no deaths from measles were reported last year. “If the number of cases has increased eightfold compared to 2022, it still remains very limited compared to the pre-Covid-19 period,” concludes Public Health France.
What are the symptoms of measles?
Measles is a highly contagious and potentially serious viral infection. The virus infects the respiratory tract and then spreads throughout the body. Symptoms usually appear 10 to 14 days after exposure:
· high fever (up to 39°C – 40°C),
· cough,
· runny nose,
· red and watery eyes,
· general fatigue,
· rash.
“Small, very red spots appear first on the face (ears, forehead, cheeks) then gradually all over the body. The rash appears a few days after the first symptoms and lasts about a week,” precise the ARS Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
