In his latest book, the doctor Martin Winckler affirms that the mistreatment of white coats towards patients is part of the French software. Reactions from the medical world.
In his book The brutes in white, which has just been published, Martin Winckler, now residing in Canada, denounces the behavior of a good number of physicians who allegedly act verbally or discriminate against patients. According to this former general practitioner, the tradition of the Mandarin doctor would continue to haunt the corridors of hospitals. He even claims that the mistreatment of doctors towards patients is part of the French software. Faced with so many attacks, the entire healthcare world was quick to react. Anthology of reactions.
At the head of the counter-offensive, we obviously find the CNOM. The Order of Physicians regrets that Martin Winckler has made the choice “of caricature and amalgam to ensure the publicity of his writings”. The Order adds that it will defend “the daily commitment of doctors, and condemn any attempt to alter the very strong bond of trust which unites our fellow citizens to their doctor”. The institution affirms this with supporting figures.
The Order and the unions wind up
Martin Winckler’s observation is “an aberration” contradicted by the results of his major consultation carried out in 2015, reminds the Order. 97% of patients say it is true that they have a “good relationship” with their attending physician, 95% with private doctors and 91% with hospital staff. And a real dialogue seems to exist between the two parties, since 94% of patients believe “that they understand what the doctor explains to them”, and 87% even affirm that “the doctor consulted listened to them attentively”.
Other doctors are still driving the point home. This is the case of Dr Jérôme Marty, president of the French Union for Free Medicine (UFML). On Twitter, he explains that there are “440 million consultations in France each year and the number of complaints of violence by the medical profession towards patients is more than minimal,” he underlines.
Often in tune with Dr Winckler’s theses, Dr Christian Lehmann almost gave him a lesson in medicine. Regarding the lack of meeting between patients and doctors outside the practice denounced by Martin Winckler, this blogger writes: “Martin, the world has changed, the Internet has changed the situation allowing doctors who would like it and there are many of them. to exchange, to shake up their certainties ”.
Patients disagree
Finally, the patients are not more tender with the author of the controversial work. Christian Saout, general delegate of the Interassociative Collective On Health (CISS) confided to Why actor : “Martin Winckler wants to be at the head of the gondola, you can’t be the head of the literature without having a catchy title, not to say salesman. A handful of cases do not constitute a statistical truth, its demonstration has limits ”. This patient advocate recognizes, however, that “doctors tend to look more at constants and parameters than at patients’ words. We have to manage to change this, ”he concludes.
