Incredible but true. In Sri Lanka, doctors have removed the world’s largest and heaviest kidney stone from a 62-year-old former sergeant, Canistus Coonge. This was announced by the country’s army this Wednesday, June 14 in a statement. Some time before the operation, the retired soldier told local TV channel Swarnavahini that he had been suffering from abdominal pain since 2020 and that medication taken by mouth was not working. “I was told to have surgery after a recent CT scan,” he had specified.

According to the army, the former non-commissioned officer was operated on June 1 at the military hospital in Colombo. Practitioners found him with a kidney stone that weighed 801 grams, more than five times the weight of an average kidney in men, and was 13.37 centimeters long, compared to 10 to 12 centimeters for an average kidney. After the removal of the lithiasis, the Guinness World Records recognized that the 60-year-old had exceeded the old record for the largest kidney stone recorded in Pakistan in 2008. The latter weighed 620 grams.
Kidney stones: deposits formed by the crystallization of minerals and salts
“The most important thing for us is that the kidney is functioning normally despite this calculation,” said Army Surgeon K. Sutharshan. After the surgery, Canistus Coonge said he felt “normal now”.
As a reminder, stones are deposits formed by the crystallization of minerals and salts in the kidneys which filter the blood. According to the MSD Manualsmall stones can be asymptomatic, but those that are of a larger size can cause excruciating pain in the area between the ribs and the hips in the back. “Stone formation can sometimes be prevented by a change in diet or by increasing fluid intake,” can we read on his website.
