Lentils contain minerals, trace elements and proteins that promote the proper functioning of the body.
- According to a study published in the journal Advances in Nutrition, regular consumption of legumes would reduce the incidence rates of cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease and hypertension.
- Rich in vegetable proteins, lentils are good alternatives to replace meat and fish.
Green, coral, black, red, brown… There are different varieties of lentils that have different tastes and appearances. Native to Central Asia, lentils are legumes with many health benefits.
Lentils, allies for the digestive system
Consuming lentils promotes cardiovascular health. These legumes contain potassium which stimulates the contraction of muscles, especially those of the heart. This mineral also reduces the bad effects of salt which can be responsible for high blood pressure. Fiber also contains vitamin B9 which has a protective effect on the heart and boosts the formation of red blood cells.
We know: fiber facilitates intestinal transit. Lentils contain a type of fiber that feeds the good bacteria in the gut. “Fiber plays an important role in regulating our intestines and protecting the immune system (…) Foods that are high in fiber, like lentils, help us stay healthy and active”noted Elyse Homan, dietitian, in an interview with the Cleveland Clinic.
Lentils are also allies against cravings and snacking between meals. Indeed, these legumes have a low glycemic index and take time to be digested by the body. They therefore promote satiety.
Antioxidants, minerals, iron… What are the benefits of lentils?
Iron is an essential trace element for the proper functioning of the body. In particular, it participates in the transport of oxygen through the blood to tissue and muscle cells, but it also provides energy to the body. In case of fatigue, you can incorporate lentils into a dish to give you a boost. Certain elements also promote the assimilation of iron by the body. “Combine lentils with a source of vitamin C such as tomatoes, potatoes, peppers or Brussels sprouts to improve iron absorption”advocated Elyse Homan.
Thanks to their richness in antioxidants, lentils fight against oxidative stress which leads to premature aging of cells. This anomaly contributes to the appearance of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, inflammatory pathologies or Alzheimer’s disease.
Lentils are very good sources of minerals. In addition to potassium, they contain phosphorus which ensures good bone mineral density for strong bones and teeth.
Legumes can be a daily alternative to meat. Lentils in particular have a very high concentration of vegetable proteins which can replace the animal proteins contained in red meat.
