Thanks to lifestyle changes, weight loss after 60 is not impossible.
- Weight loss is possible even after age 60.
- Lifestyle changes contribute to weight loss.
- Opting for a balanced diet and regular physical activity is the best strategy for losing weight.
We often think that it is more difficult to lose weight after the age of 60. However, a 2020 British study showed that age does not affect weight loss. This work was published in the journal The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
Age does not influence weight loss
To carry out this study, scientists from the University of Warwick (England) recruited 242 patients suffering from morbid obesity. For several years, the volunteers benefited from personalized follow-up including lifestyle changes to promote weight loss. No surgical intervention was performed during this period.
Throughout the study, researchers compared each participant’s weight loss and body mass index (BMI) decrease. They then discovered that “Age does not influence weight loss success”. Lifestyle changes had the same effect on the weight of subjects whether they were over or under 60 years old. So successful weight loss is not conditioned by age. “Therefore, age per se should not influence clinical decisions regarding patient acceptance into hospital obesity services”stressed the scientists.
Healthy diet and regular physical activity, the keys to weight loss
To promote weight loss, a balanced diet combined with regular physical activity is a good strategy. Different sports such as swimming, running, cycling or even muscle strengthening can help you lose weight.
When it comes to food, we choose nutrients that are good for the body such as fiber, lipids or proteins. You can compose your menus with fruits, vegetables, legumes (lentils, white beans, chickpeas, etc.), whole grains and proteins (poultry, white meat).
