Mayonnaise is fatter, but ketchup has a lot of sugar
Good question! In this section, Health Net is looking for answers to nagging questions. This time: is ketchup healthier than mayonnaise?
We eat an average of 2.4 liters of mayonnaise and 1.25 liters of ketchup per person per year. But which is the healthiest choice: mayonnaise or ketchup?
Nutrients
When you compare the calories of a tablespoon of mayonnaise with the calories of a tablespoon of ketchup, a tablespoon of mayonnaise contains more than six times as many calories as a tablespoon of ketchup.
Ketchup, on the other hand, contains an amazing amount of sugar, while mayonnaise has almost no sugar added. Sugar is of course very unhealthy. So if you want to eat less sugar, you should avoid ketchup.
Mayonnaise vs Ketchup
Ketchup therefore contains a lot of sugar and mayonnaise contains a lot of fat, 70 percent of mayonnaise consists of no less than fat. This high fat percentage in mayonnaise is not necessarily wrong. The fat in mayonnaise ensures that you stay full longer, because fat is digested slowly.
Whether you should opt for mayonnaise or ketchup depends on what you want: more sugar or fat. Neither is healthy, but as with all foods, you can enjoy them occasionally and in moderation.
