In western Iran, a giant has been unearthed. Archaeologists have discovered a two-meter man. An exceptional size for the time.
The discovery is literally colossal. In Iran, the skeleton of a two-meter man has been unearthed. A find of the kind that makes many archeology enthusiasts dream. But it was professionals who opened the tomb in question, made of clay and stone. It contains precious elements to better understand life under the first Persian empires.
An old man
About two meters: this is the estimated size of the skeleton exhumed in the province of Lorestan, west of Iran. Archaeologists rely on the unusual size of the tomb to reach this conclusion. It is indeed 2.25 meters long. This scale seems unimpressive, given the size of today’s basketball players.
But at the time of the Sassanids (from 224 to 651), the Iranian people measured, on average, 1.60 meters. This former giant was nevertheless well since, according to the director of the excavations, Ata Hasanpour, the tomb is that of “an old man”. A mystery remains: the identity of this exceptional old man.

Food leftovers
The province of Lorestan has obviously not revealed all its secrets. In this region, which is one of the oldest places inhabited by man, archaeologists have also raised a separate cemetery from the ground. It is only made up of children and adolescents.
This excavation goes further since it gives us a glimpse of life in Iran in very ancient times. “We have discovered objects dating from the Achaemenid Empire (founded in 550 BC, editor’s note)”, underlines Ata Hasanpour. Tableware, ceramics, coins dating back to the first Persian Empire… the list goes on. The graves even contained pots where traces of food are still detectable. They date from the Parthian Empire, which spanned from 247 BC to 224 AD.
