While sleeping next to his charging iPhone, an American received a strong electric shock. His collar would have tangled with the wire of the charger.
Wiley Day, 32, is an American like any other. This Alabama resident is equipped with an iPhone, the flagship product of the Apple brand. A bitter-tasting apple for this thirty-something.
Last March, the man was indeed electrocuted by the charger of his iPhone, while he let his phone charge while he slept. According to the first elements of the investigation, the magnetic part of the device made contact with the chain that Wiley wore around his neck, sending him a shock that could have been fatal. Experts explain that it is the metal of her collar that acted as a current conductor carrying electricity to her neck.
An electrification
It is therefore an electrification and not a “electrocution” which refers exclusively to cases of electrification resulting in death, reminds health insurance.
Wiley owes his salvation to a saving reflex, the one he had when removing his collar from his neck, to which, however, pieces of skin remained stuck. After calling his niece for help, he was taken to hospital where doctors diagnosed him with second and third degree burns to his neck and hands. After several days of treatment, Wiley finally came out of the hospital cured, but with beautiful scars.
Mr. 110 volts
An American physicist named Benjamin fail estimated that Wiley had received a 110-volt shock, whereas electricity can cause death from 100 volts. “I felt a strong pressure […]. I would say that it is probably the equivalent of a shot, ”said the victim to the Washington Post.
According to the American Burn Association, extension cords are the cause of 4,700 home fires, 50 deaths and 280 injuries each year in the United States. As a reminder, this iPhone accident is not unique. In England, a man recently died in his bath from an electrocution related to the use of his iPhone. It was the second case in a month.
