The Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics Department surveyed people using accommodation or meal distribution services in order to assess the state of health of homeless people. No one will be surprised to learn that the latter claim to be in good health less frequently than the general population. But it is women over 60 who seem most affected: only 10% of them consider themselves in good health, against half of women in this age group in the general population. For homeless men over 60, this share rises to 47%.
A different life course and premature aging would explain this result: indeed, at the same age, homeless women have more seniority in temporary accommodation than men. This is especially the case from the age of 60: 77% of homeless women report having used temporary accommodation services for at least two years compared to only 26% of men.
A quarter of the homeless in depression
The state of oral health is one of the markers of degraded physical health among the homeless. More than a quarter of respondents say that they have all their teeth intact, while 43% indicate that some of their teeth have been treated or replaced, 24% that they have lost part of their teeth and 7% specify that they have lost all of their teeth. teeth or almost.
Asked about a predefined list of fifteen pathologies, nearly a quarter of homeless people aged 18 or over say they are in depression. This pathology is hardly more declared by women (24%) than by men (22%). Among the other diseases proposed to the surveyed and declared, one counts migraines (20%), arterial hypertension (15%), asthma (12%), cholesterol (10%), diabetes (8%), epilepsy (7%) and viral hepatitis (6%).
