The 21-year-old mother did not expect such a reaction from the emergency room receptionist at Derby Royal Hospital in the UK. At the end of November, Daveanah Cowie takes Tommy-Lee, her 7-week-old son to the emergency room. The little one is ill and Arlow-Jack, his twin brother, is already hospitalized with bronchitis.
Arriving in the ward, she realizes that her infant is no longer breathing. Panicking, she immediately asks the receptionist to call a doctor. The latter’s response is completely out of step with the situation. “Instead of finding a doctor, she decided to write down my information and told me to go sit down and wait my turn,” the young mother tells the Derby Telegraph.
“If I had waited my baby could have died”
Stunned by this request, Daveanah Cowie rushes through the halls to find a doctor who is resuscitating her baby. After stopping breathing several times, little Tommy-Lee was placed on life support. “I can’t believe we can be so irresponsible. If I had waited, my baby could have died,” she protested.
Today, the infant is still hospitalized but his condition is slowly improving. The twins were transferred to Queen’s Medical center in Nottingham.
A spokesperson for the hospital spoke out in the face of Daveanah Cowie’s anger. “Our priority is always the care of babies and children brought to our pediatric emergency department, and thanks to the skills of our highly qualified team, this baby has received appropriate care”.
The hospital specifies that it has opened an investigation and is in the process of reviewing the training received by the people in charge of reception in this service.
