THE’European health interview survey, published by the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) indicates that just over half of adults (51.6%) were considered to be in overweight (35.7% pre-obese and 15.9% obese) and 2.3% underweight. In other words, almost 1 in 6 people aged 18 or over in the EU was obese in 2014.
The proportion of obese adults clearly varies by age group. With the exception of those aged 75 and over, the older the age, the more the proportion of obese people increases: it is 22.1% among 65-74 year olds, whereas it is only 5.7 % among 18-24 year olds. It also varies according to the level of education: the higher the level, the lower the obesity rate, in almost all Member States for which data are available.
15.1% of obese adults in France
Among the EU Member States for which data are available, the lowest obesity rates were recorded in Romania (9.4%) as well as in Italy (10.7%), ahead of the European countries. Bottom (13.3%), Belgium and Sweden (14.0% each) and finally France (15.1%).
At the other end of the scale, obesity affects more than one in 4 adults in Malta (26.0%) and around 1 in 5 adults in Latvia (21.3%), Hungary (21.2%) %), Estonia (20.4%) and the United Kingdom (20.1%).
