The high temperatures this weekend could disrupt our nights. To guard against this, there are a few tips to follow.
- This weekend, throughout France, temperatures will be between 30 and 35 degrees on average.
- To sleep well despite the heat, you have to cool both the living rooms and your body.
Up to 38 degrees! The heat record for this weekend of June 12 and 13, 2021 will be reached on Sunday, in Montpellier ! But this heat wave affects all of France. In many regions the average will be around 30 degrees, or even close to 35 degrees in the southern half of the country, according to Meteo France. But with such temperatures, how can you sleep well at night?
In the evening, create a draft to cool the bedroom
The first advice is to close the shutters and windows of your room during the day and only open them in the evening, when the temperatures drop. If possible, the ideal is to create a current of air to ventilate and cool the room. Once this is done, before going to bed, it is possible to turn on a fan or the air conditioning to cool the atmosphere. But be careful not to leave them on overnight because if the room gets too cool, the temperature difference with the outside can cause colds. Finally, it is best to turn off electronic devices that emit heat, such as computers.
Sleep in light, cotton clothing
In summer, it is recommended to eat light in the evening. This advice is not only virtuous for the line or digestion, but also because it allows you to sleep better. On the other hand, once the evening is over and just before sleeping, you also need to cool your body. For this, it is best to start with a lukewarm shower and not a cold one, as this increases the heart rate and produces heat. Prefer, then, a light and cotton outfit if possible because this material absorbs perspiration. And, for a final touch of freshness before lying down: use a spray on the forearms and legs! Of course, it will be all the fresher if it comes out of the refrigerator. Finally, leave a bottle of water on your bedside table so you can stay hydrated during the night.
The national heat wave plan has been activated since June 1
Since June 1, the national heat wave plan has been activated. Like every year, until September 15, it aims to inform the population about the risks associated with high temperatures and the advice to follow to live this period as well as possible. According to Public health France, during a heat wave, you must: avoid going out during the hottest hours, keep your home cool, drink regularly, avoid physical exertion, cool and wet your body – especially your face and forearms – several times a day , etc This year, messages (via social networks, the screens of local shops and SMS) will be sent to the most vulnerable people as soon as a department goes into orange vigilance.
Last summer, 1,924 additional deaths due to the heat wave
During the heat wave of 2020, 77% of the population experienced at least one day when the alert thresholds were exceeded. There were 15,000 visits to the emergency room which resulted in 10,000 hospitalizations. Finally, 1,924 additional deaths were recorded during the heat wave days, i.e. an 18% increase in mortality. Last summer was the one that represented the most significant health impact, the implementation of the national heat wave plan in 2004, just ahead of the summers of 2015, 2018 and 2019.
